WHAT IS AN ERCP, AND WHY DO WE DO IT?

WHAT?

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography is a procedure which combines upper endoscopy and x-rays to treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts.

WHY?

The ERCP is used when it is suspected a person’s bile or pancreatic ducts may be narrowed or blocked due to:
  • Duct valves (sphincters) don’t open properly
  • Gallstones that may get stuck in the bile duct
  • Inflammation due to trauma or illness, such as inflammation or pancreatitis
